Mold licensing is a patchwork of state requirements and voluntary national certifications. Here are the three key areas to understand.
About 11 states plus DC require specific mold licenses. Many distinguish between mold assessors/inspectors and mold remediators, requiring separate licenses for each. A key principle in licensed states: the same company generally cannot perform both assessment and remediation on a project.
In states without licensing, national certifications from ACAC (CMRS, CMC, CIEC), IICRC (AMRT, WRT), and MICRO (CMI, CMR) serve as the industry standard. These certifications demonstrate competency and are often expected by clients and insurance companies.
Training typically ranges from 24-40 hours depending on the state and certification. Insurance is critical — general liability ($1M+), E&O for inspectors, and pollution liability for remediators. The EPA does not regulate mold; there are no federal mold standards.
