Scope Defined
Becoming a medical assistant involves education, certification, and understanding your state's scope of practice rules. Here are the three key areas.
Most employers require completion of a postsecondary medical assisting program. Certificate programs take 9-12 months; associate degrees take 2 years. Programs should be accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES for CMA eligibility. Coursework covers clinical skills (vitals, injections, phlebotomy) and administrative tasks (billing, coding, records).
Three main certifications exist: CMA (AAMA) — the gold standard, requiring an accredited program; RMA (AMT) — multiple pathways including work experience; and CCMA (NHA) — requires approved training. While not legally required in most states, certification significantly improves employability and earning potential.
Most states do not license medical assistants, instead regulating them through physician delegation and supervision statutes. Washington is notable for requiring state credentialing. All states define what tasks MAs can perform under physician supervision, including clinical duties (vitals, injections) and administrative tasks.
