What Makes Oklahoma Unique
Oklahoma recently underwent dramatic changes in its notary requirements effective 2025-2026. The bond requirement increased ten-fold from $1,000 to $10,000, fees roughly doubled across the board, a new exam requirement was introduced for the first time, and a national criminal background check is now mandatory. These changes represent one of the most significant overhauls of notary requirements by any state in recent years.
Oklahoma underwent MAJOR changes in 2025-2026 via House Bill 2265 and related legislation.
As of January 1, 2026: application fees doubled ($25 to $50), renewal fees more than doubled ($20 to $45), bond requirements increased 10x ($1,000 to $10,000), and bond filing fees increased from $10 to $25.
A new exam requirement was introduced for all new notaries as of 2026 - previously no exam was required.
National criminal history background check with fingerprints is required at a cost of $50.
Must file bond and oaths with the SOS within 60 days of commission issuance.
